Jack Vance is a unique science fiction writer who has won two Hugo Awards; one for, "The Dragon Masters," and the other for, "The Last Castle". I believe they were both published in Galaxy magazine. And yet, just as I think of Ray Bradbury not being just another SF writer, neither do I think of Jack Vance that way. Vance's writing style is filled with unusual words and colorful phrases that reveal an elegance and sophistication, often with touches of humor, that you don't see in most other SF writers.
Reading Vance, like reading Bradbury, is not the same experience that you get from reading other SF writers, their stories take you to another special level of reading pleasure and enjoyment. If you read Vance's, "Dying Earth" stories I think you will see what I mean.
